Per alimentare le montature astronomiche e altro equipaggiamento esistono fondamentalmente due possibilità: gli alimentatori o le batterie.
Un alimentatore fornisce una tensione costante per un periodo illimitato. Si tratta quindi della scelta ideale per gli strumenti installati permanentemente in giardino, sul terrazzo o sul balcone. L’astronomia itinerante tuttavia richiede l’uso di batterie, spesso chiamate anche powertank.
